On August 20, 2024, a boat capsized off the coast of Yemen’s Ta’iz province, killing thirteen Ethiopian migrants and leaving fourteen more missing, according to a report from the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
The ship sank close to the Dubab area in the Bani Al-Hakam sub-district, carrying two Yemeni crew members and twenty-five Ethiopian migrants as it sailed from Djibouti, according to IOM sources.
The bodies of the deceased, which consist of 11 men and 2 women, were found near Al-Shura in the Dubab district on the banks of Bab-al-Mandab. According to the IOM, investigations are still underway to find the missing passengers, including the Yemeni captain and his assistant. The cause of the incident is currently under investigation.
According to Matt Huber, the acting chief of mission for IOM in Yemen, “this tragedy highlights the ongoing dangers migrants face on this route.” Huber emphasized the significance of teamwork in averting such situations and safeguarding susceptible refugees.
There have been several catastrophes involving Ethiopian migrants before this one. Twelve Ethiopian migrants perished in a shipwreck off the coast of Yemen in July, while four more were reported missing. Another boat capsized in June off the coast of Yemen, leaving about 100 people missing and 38 dead.
