At least 13 people have died following the collapse of a mining site in Plateau State, located in north-central Nigeria. The victims, aged between 18 and 30, were from the Bassa Local Government Area. The tragic incident occurred on Saturday at the borders of Bassa, Jos South, and Jos North Local Government Areas, where the victims had been working in a mining pit to earn a living.
Joshua Riti, a government official from Plateau State, confirmed the fatalities and revealed that the young miners were part of a growing number of individuals engaged in informal mining activities across the region.
This mining accident follows a similar tragedy that claimed the lives of 22 miners in Taraba and Adamawa States. The illegal mining site, located within a national game reserve, collapsed due to the absence of safety measures, highlighting the risks associated with unregulated mining activities in the country.
The repeated incidents underscore the urgent need for stricter oversight and regulation of mining practices in Nigeria, as well as increased efforts to ensure the safety of those working in the industry.
