Prime Minister Allah Maye Halina of Chad highlighted the following key points in his speech on UN General Assembly:
- Security Challenges in the Sahel: He emphasized that peace is a major challenge for Chad and other Sahel countries due to terrorism. While regional efforts are in place, the lack of genuine global commitment to eradicating terrorism could lead to its spread across Africa. He called for stronger international cooperation for stability.
- 2030 Agenda and Climate Change: He stressed the importance of global cooperation to meet the 2030 Agenda goals. Chad faces multiple challenges such as climate change, drought, desertification, and flooding, which threaten food security and damage vulnerable populations. He urged the international community to fulfill its promises on climate finance, justice, and technology transfer.
- Chad’s National Efforts: Chad is working to improve access to education, clean water, healthcare, energy, and economic opportunities. He stressed the importance of fighting poverty and gender inequality through partnerships focused on the needs of least-developed countries. He also called for equitable access to vaccines and advanced medical technology.
- Youth Investment: More than 65% of Chad’s population is young, and the government is investing in education and political participation to prevent youth from being radicalized. He urged the UN to support open labor markets and environments where youth can thrive.
- Refugee Crisis: Chad hosts over 2 million refugees, which strains its resources. He urged the international community to support both refugees and host communities, particularly in light of the ongoing Sudanese conflict. He called for a ceasefire and dialogue in Sudan, noting that peace cannot be achieved through force.
- Regional and Global Conflicts: He condemned ongoing violence in conflicts such as the Ukraine war and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. He reaffirmed Chad’s support for a two-state solution for Palestine and called for an end to violence in Gaza. Additionally, he urged the lifting of the embargo on Cuba and advocated for African representation in UN Security Council reforms.
Overall, he called for greater global solidarity and action in addressing terrorism, climate change, inequality, and conflicts affecting both Africa and the broader world.
