Zambia has been elected as a council member of the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), an international organization with 48 member states, chaired by former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.
Zambia’s Green Economy and Environment Minister, Mike Mposha, presented the country’s candidacy at the 13th Assembly and 17th Council Sessions held at GGGI Headquarters in Seoul, South Korea.
During a Ministerial Panel on “Addressing Plastic Pollution in the Context of Green Growth,” Mr. Mposha highlighted Zambia’s growing waste management challenges, which threaten economic, environmental, and social sustainability. However, he emphasized that waste management also presents investment opportunities, particularly in areas such as waste-to-energy projects, waste-to-compost for urban agriculture, and engineered landfills.
GGGI, established in 2012, is a treaty-based organization focused on fostering sustainable economic growth in developing and emerging economies. Ban Ki-moon serves as President of the Assembly and Chair of the Council.
