Moussa Faki Mahamat, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, has issued a strong condemnation following the tragic deaths of Mr. Elvino Dias and Mr. Paulo Gambe, expressing his deepest condolences to their families and loved ones. He urged the Mozambican authorities to conduct a swift and thorough investigation to ensure that those responsible for these heinous acts are brought to justice.
The Chairperson’s statement comes as Mozambique grapples with the aftermath of the General Elections held on 9 October 2024. Mahamat expressed deep concern over the reported cases of post-election violence, particularly the recent killings, which have heightened tensions in the country. He reminded the public that the African Union had deployed a short-term election observer mission to ensure a fair and transparent process.
Mahamat appealed to all political leaders in Mozambique to maintain a peaceful and calm disposition while the nation awaits the final results, which are set to be declared by the Constitutional Council. He called on all political parties and their supporters to respect the due process and exercise utmost restraint, emphasizing that the stability of the country must remain the top priority for all involved.
