Somali President Visits Kenya to Discuss Security Cooperation
Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud arrived in Kenya on Monday as part of his regional tour to meet with nations contributing troops to the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS).
During his stay, President Mohamud is set to engage in discussions with Kenyan President William Ruto, aiming to enhance bilateral relations and assist Somalia in its transition to complete self-defense responsibilities.
This visit follows meetings earlier in the week with leaders from Uganda, Burundi, and Djibouti, where they addressed the gradual withdrawal of ATMIS forces from Somalia.
ATMIS is scheduled to conclude its mission by December 2024. In 2025, it will be succeeded by the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), which will feature a reduced troop presence of approximately 11,000 soldiers.
AUSSOM’s primary focus will be on securing urban areas and vital infrastructure, allowing Somali forces to spearhead national security initiatives.
