Nigerian national team player Alex Iwobi, who plays for Premier League side Fulham, aims to inspire people not only through his successful football career but also with his music.
The left-winger, who ventured into the rap scene earlier this year, has just released his second single. His first track, “Don’t Shoot,” reached 60,000 streams on Spotify and was written with a pacifist perspective, aiming to encourage young people to stay away from street violence.
In his new release, “What’s Luv?” the lyrics are more focused on Africa and his respect for his African roots.
The professional player shared his thoughts on his music career, saying,
“Growing up in an area of London that is challenging for some people, I know how hard it can be and I’m grateful to have a platform to try and make a difference.”
“I hope that my music is another way of proving that young people do not have to feel they have to fit in just one box. I want them to be encouraged to achieve their dreams, to put their focus into positive things.”
“Creating music doesn’t take anything away from my football; it helps me switch off. I will always work hard and try to improve in my sport, but this is a good use of my spare time,” he added.
There have been other players who achieved success in both football and music. English footballer Paul Gascoigne joined a rock band to release the song “Fog on the Tyne,” which reached number two in the UK charts in 1990.
Likewise, players like Andy Cole, Glenn Hoddle, Chris Waddle, and Kevin Keegan made national achievements in music. Chelsea’s legendary goalkeeper Petr Cech is also a skilled drummer, while Dion Dublin invented his own musical instrument called the Dube.
Will Alex Iwobi achieve success in his music career like these footballers? Only time will tell.
