Wireless Technology Labs (WTL) is looking to establish Nigeria’s first Mobile Virtual Network in partnership with MobileCoreX Ltd. (MCX), the country’s leading Mobile Virtual Network Enabler.
This project will utilize millions of dollars in capital. With a population of 220 million, Nigeria ranks sixth in the world; however, due to low broadband penetration and poor service quality, there are significant challenges in mobile connectivity.
This project aims to address these issues. Only 29% of the population has access to mobile internet, primarily due to low coverage. In 2023, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) issued 43 Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) licenses to improve service in underserved areas. MCX was one of the companies that received a license during this process.
MCX CEO Habib Ahmed evaluated these challenges and solutions, stating,
“Coverage, poor quality of service, costs, and inflexible value propositions in Nigeria have persisted for too long. We are committed to leveraging innovative technology to create more competitive networks that reduce costs for consumers and provide value propositions that suit their needs.”
He also emphasized WTL’s critical role in delivering carrier-grade core systems necessary to meet the diverse needs of clients, including voice, data, and MVNO services.
WTL CEO Satya Mekala assessed the partnership with MCX by saying,
“This partnership is about empowering a new entrant to make a significant impact in the telecom market. We are committed to supporting MCX in its journey from a newcomer to a major player in the industry. Our advanced core systems will ensure that MCX can offer reliable, scalable, and innovative mobile services from day one.”
This collaboration is seen as a significant step for Nigeria in terms of mobile connectivity and digital adoption.
