After the semi-final draw, Sundowns, the reigning champions for the past seven seasons, are seen as being very close to the Carling Knockout Cup final after their stunning 4-0 victory over Kaizer Chiefs.
Sundowns, who are currently contending with Orlando Pirates in the league, will face Marumo Gallants in the cup semi-final.
The other three teams remaining in the tournament besides Sundowns are Magesi FC, Richards Bay, and Marumo Gallants, all of whom are battling in the lower ranks of the league.
Newly promoted this year, Magesi shocked everyone by defeating Orlando Pirates 3-2 in the round of 16, which has led many Sundowns fans to believe there’s no significant obstacle left between them and the cup.
If Sundowns manage to overcome their semi-final opponent, they will face the winner of the match between Magesi and Richards Bay in the final. Sundowns’ opponent, Marumo Gallants, also managed to reach the semi-finals by defeating last year’s cup winner, Stellenbosch FC, with a 1-0 scoreline.
However, Gallants have had a rough start to their league season, collecting only 4 points from 6 matches, placing them 14th in the standings. Sundowns’ dominant 4-0 win over Kaizer Chiefs, one of the league’s top teams, is further evidence of just how close they are to claiming the cup.
