Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, has passed away at the age of 56 after a battle with illness, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu confirmed on Wednesday. Lt. General Lagbaja died in Lagos on Tuesday night.
A distinguished military leader, Lt. General Lagbaja was appointed to the role of Chief of Army Staff by President Tinubu in June 2023. Born on February 28, 1968, he began his career in the Nigerian Army in 1987, enrolling at the Nigerian Defence Academy. After completing his training, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in 1992 as part of the 39th Regular Course in the Nigerian Infantry Corps.
Throughout his decades-long military career, Lt. General Lagbaja was known for his leadership in critical internal security operations. His strategic input was vital in various operations, including Operation ZAKI in Benue, Lafiya Dole in Borno, and Operation Forest Sanity in Kaduna and Niger states. His expertise in military strategy was instrumental in shaping Nigeria’s responses to security challenges across the country.
In addition to his military experience, Lt. General Lagbaja was a committed academic, earning a Master’s degree in Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College. His educational background complemented his military acumen, contributing to his reputation as a strategic thinker and a steadfast leader.
Lt. General Lagbaja is survived by his wife, Mariya, and their two children. In a statement, President Tinubu expressed his heartfelt condolences, describing the late general as an “exceptional leader” whose passing leaves a significant void in Nigeria’s military leadership.
The President added, “Nigeria mourns with his family and the Armed Forces. May his soul rest in eternal peace.”
