The Mohammed VI Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Rabat is celebrating its 10-year anniversary, reflecting on a decade of showcasing world-class exhibitions and solidifying its status as a cultural landmark in Morocco.
Since its inception, the museum has hosted over 35 major exhibitions, featuring works by renowned global artists such as Picasso, Delacroix, Matisse, Alberto Giacometti, Henri Cartier-Bresson, and Francisco Goya, alongside Moroccan talent. Mehdi Kotbi, chairman of the National Foundation of Museums, expressed pride in the institution’s achievements, describing it as a cornerstone of Morocco’s cultural development.
As the first museum in the country dedicated exclusively to modern and contemporary art that meets international standards, the institution has become a beacon for Arab and African artists. Current plans aim to further expand its repertoire with high-profile exhibitions in the future.
To mark the milestone, the museum unveiled two monumental installations by Portuguese artist Joanna Vasconcelos. Previously showcased at prestigious venues such as the Château de Versailles and London’s Royal Academy of Arts, these works, titled “Mary Poppins” and “Royal”, highlight the intersection of femininity and power, crafted by women artisans.
In addition, the museum is hosting the exhibition “Cobra: A Multi-Headed Snake”, exploring the avant-garde movement of post-World War II European art. The collection, on display until March 3, delves into the surrealist and experimental approaches that defined the movement, emphasizing vibrant colors and creative freedom.
With an ambitious vision for the future, the Mohammed VI Museum remains a vital space for celebrating artistic innovation and cultural exchange in Morocco and beyond.
