Former Benin police chief General Louis Philippe Houndegnon has been arrested on charges of “incitement to rebellion” and is awaiting trial, set to begin on December 16, judicial sources confirmed on Friday.
Houndegnon, a critic of the current government, was a key figure during the administration of former President Thomas Boni Yayi but was dismissed in 2016 by President Patrice Talon. His arrest follows the recent detention of several high-profile figures accused of plotting a coup, highlighting rising political tensions in the country.
Sources close to Houndegnon described him as calm and in good spirits despite his detention.
Political fractures appear to be emerging within President Talon’s camp as he approaches the end of his constitutionally mandated second term in 2026. In September, prominent allies, including businessman Olivier Boko and former Sports Minister Oswald Homeky, were accused of conspiring to seize power.
Once celebrated as a model of multi-party democracy, Benin has faced increasing criticism for authoritarian practices since Talon assumed office in 2016.
