The ongoing conflict in Sudan’s Al Jazirah state has claimed at least 527 lives in the Al-Hilalliya area since late October, with over one million people displaced. The violence intensified following the defection of a Rapid Support Forces (RSF) commander to the army.
Reports indicate that the RSF has targeted villages in eastern Al Jazirah since October 21, with documented fatalities including 53 children and 293 women. Displacement has particularly affected areas like Al-Kamlin and Al-Laota, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis.
Al Jazirah, previously home to around two million people, now faces additional pressures from displaced individuals fleeing the conflict. Residents attempting to leave villages under RSF control face extortion and further abuse, compounding their suffering.
Cholera outbreaks in the Rufaa area have also escalated, with over 100 fatalities reported and daily death tolls ranging from seven to ten.
The violence in Al Jazirah reflects the broader conflict between the RSF and the Sudanese army, which began in April and continues to devastate the region.
