At the G20 Leaders Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Nigerian President Bola Tinubu endorsed the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty, an initiative spearheaded by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Tinubu praised the alliance as a critical step in addressing hunger and poverty worldwide, highlighting its emphasis on collaboration between governments, international organizations, and civil society to tackle both immediate needs and structural issues.
Tinubu aligned the initiative with Nigeria’s domestic priorities, emphasizing the country’s commitment to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly eradicating poverty (SDG 1) and achieving zero hunger (SDG 2). He noted that Nigeria’s endorsement of the alliance signals its dedication to leveraging international cooperation and resources to bolster its own strategies for sustainable development.
In his address, Tinubu also called for reforms to the United Nations Security Council to better reflect global diversity, advocating for two permanent seats for Africa. He affirmed Nigeria’s readiness to represent the continent in this capacity and urged the G20 to champion such reforms.
Tinubu described the G20’s recent inclusion of the African Union as a member as a forward-looking move toward reform-minded multilateralism.
