The final group stage matches of AFCON were played yesterday, and the standings and advancing teams have been determined.
In Group A, Comoros secured the top spot with 12 points, while Tunisia finished second with 10 points to advance alongside them. Gambia, with 8 points, and Madagascar, with 2 points, failed to progress further in the tournament.
In Group B, one of the tournament’s most in-form teams, Morocco, dominated by winning all six of their matches to finish with 18 points as group leaders. Gabon followed with 10 points to also qualify. Lesotho, with 4 points, and the Central African Republic, with 3 points, were eliminated.
In Group C, tournament favorites Egypt took the lead with 14 points. Botswana joined them in the knockout stages, finishing second with 8 points. Mauritania, with 7 points, and Cape Verde, with 4 points, fell short of qualification.
Group D was eventful, with last year’s finalists Nigeria topping the group with 11 points. Benin edged into second place on goal difference to advance as well. Rwanda and Libya were eliminated.
In Group E, Algeria accumulated 16 points to finish as group leaders, advancing alongside Equatorial Guinea, who collected 8 points. Togo, with 5 points, and Liberia, with 4 points, were knocked out of the tournament.
Group F delivered a shock as one of the tournament’s standout teams, Ghana, managed only 3 points and finished last in the group, resulting in their elimination. Niger also fell short with 7 points. However, Angola led the group with 14 points, and Sudan joined them with 8 points.
In Group G, Zambia topped the group with 13 points, surpassing last year’s champions Ivory Coast, who still managed to advance in second place with 12 points. Sierra Leone and Chad were eliminated.
In Group H, the Democratic Republic of Congo claimed the top spot with 12 points, while Tanzania finished second with 10 points to qualify. Guinea’s 9 points were not enough, and they were eliminated alongside Ethiopia, who had 4 points.
In Group I, Mali led the group with 14 points, followed by Mozambique in second place with 11 points. Guinea-Bissau and Eswatini failed to progress further.
Group J saw one of the tournament’s strong teams, Cameroon, finish first with 14 points, while Zimbabwe took second place with 9 points to advance. Kenya and Namibia were eliminated.
In Group K, South Africa and Uganda easily secured qualification. South Africa accumulated 14 points, while Uganda followed with 13 points. The Republic of Congo and South Sudan were knocked out.
Finally, in Group L, Senegal emerged as group leaders with 16 points. Burkina Faso claimed second place with 10 points. Malawi and Burundi both finished with 4 points and were eliminated.
