A multi-ministerial task force, including experts from key government departments and sector institutions, has been launched to combat the rising wave of cybercrime in Tanzania. The initiative reflects the government’s commitment to strengthening the country’s digital security.
Home Affairs Minister Hamad Yusuf Masauni announced the task force’s formation during a press briefing in Dar es Salaam. The collaboration involves ministries of Home Affairs, Information, Constitutional and Legal Affairs, and Community Development. Telecommunications companies and the private sector are also integral to the effort, with Information Minister Jerry Silaa leading coordination.
The task force’s immediate focus includes addressing cybercrime hotspots in Rukwa, Mbeya, Morogoro, and Dar es Salaam. Measures outlined include stricter mobile user registration, public awareness campaigns on digital safety, and enhanced financial literacy initiatives with support from the Bank of Tanzania.
Advanced technologies like artificial intelligence will aid in tracking suspicious activities, improving the detection and prevention of cybercrime. With over 80.7 million SIM cards registered nationwide, these efforts aim to boost accountability while safeguarding the digital space.
This initiative highlights Tanzania’s proactive approach to creating a secure digital environment, prioritizing education, policy enforcement, and technology innovation. Officials anticipate a safer, more responsible online landscape through these collaborative efforts.
