South Africa has once again called for an immediate ceasefire in Palestine and Lebanon, urging a renewed political process to secure a just and lasting peace in the region. In a statement issued to mark the 47th United Nations International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, the South African government reiterated its long-standing position that peace in the Middle East can only be achieved through a two-state solution.
“The only viable path to peace is a solution where Israel coexists peacefully with a fully independent and viable Palestinian state, within internationally recognized borders,” South Africa’s statement read.
The government emphasized that the unresolved Palestinian issue, which has persisted for 75 years, remains a major driver of instability in the Middle East. It highlighted the importance of the International Day of Solidarity as a moment for the global community to reflect on the ongoing hardships faced by Palestinians.
“This day provides a critical opportunity to reflect on the suffering of the Palestinian people and to reaffirm our commitment to justice and peace,” the statement continued.
South Africa also reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to strengthening its relationship with Palestine, pledging continued support for initiatives that seek to focus international attention on the Palestinian cause. “In line with South Africa’s principled stance in support of Palestine, the government remains dedicated to efforts that will reinvigorate the Middle East peace process,” the statement added.
The South African government called on the international community to increase its efforts in helping Palestinians achieve their aspirations for freedom, justice, and the establishment of an independent state.
