The Foreign Ministers of the G7 nations—Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States—along with the High Representative of the European Union, have issued a joint statement condemning Russia’s actions in Libya. The statement expressed their unwavering commitment to safeguarding Libya’s sovereignty, stability, independence, territorial integrity, and unity.
The group called for an immediate withdrawal of all foreign fighters and mercenaries from Libya, emphasizing that Russia’s “malign activities” undermine the country’s sovereignty and regional security. They also reiterated their support for Libya’s request to the United Nations Security Council for enhanced international assistance in coordinating security efforts across the nation.
Highlighting progress, the statement welcomed the recent agreement on new leadership for Libya’s Central Bank, describing it as a critical step towards political compromise and sustainable stability. This development, they noted, could facilitate the path to free, fair, and inclusive presidential and parliamentary elections, enabling the reunification of Libya’s political, economic, and military institutions.
The G7 ministers also praised the High National Elections Commission and the recent municipal elections held on November 16, underscoring their importance in allowing Libyans to exercise democratic rights. They reaffirmed their strong support for the United Nations and UNSMIL’s efforts, led by officer-in-charge Stephanie Koury, to foster inclusive dialogue among Libyan parties to resolve political fragmentation.
