Kgosientsho Ramokgopa has reassured South Africans that the department, in collaboration with the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) and municipalities, is dedicated to finding a lasting solution to the rising electricity costs. During a media briefing on Monday, he emphasized the urgent need for an effective electricity pricing plan.
Ramokgopa also discussed municipal initiatives, like the controversial surcharge, which have been poorly received by communities. He stressed that the focus is not on debating the necessity of such fees but on developing a comprehensive and sustainable solution to the issue.
The Minister noted that discussions with SALGA had already started during the sixth administration. He emphasized the need for collective action, acknowledging that the current situation is unsustainable as communities are increasingly frustrated and struggling with electricity costs.
Ramokgopa stated that despite the fact that municipal affairs are typically within local authorities’ jurisdiction, the ministry, along with the Deputy Minister, is committed to addressing the issue. He assured that they are working with SALGA to find a domestic solution.
He highlighted the crucial role of the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) in this process. According to Ramokgopa, Nersa’s independent authority is vital for protecting consumers and scrutinizing proposed tariff increases from both Eskom and municipalities. The aim is to collaborate with Nersa to develop a framework that balances the needs of both the poor and affluent, ensuring that electricity remains accessible and affordable while also supporting industries. The Minister assured that they are dedicated to working with municipalities to resolve the issue.
