Botswana is strengthening its efforts to ensure the ethical sourcing and traceability of diamonds, following a partnership with the G7 aimed at boosting certification processes. This move is part of a broader effort to comply with G7 restrictions that prohibit the import of Russian-origin diamonds. The import ban, which took effect on January 1, 2024, was extended on March 1, 2024, to include Russian diamonds processed in third countries. On the same day, the EU launched the first certification hub designed to verify the origin of rough diamonds and issue G7-compliant certificates.
In response, Botswana has been working closely with Belgian teams to conduct a comprehensive gap analysis of its diamond certification framework. The objective is to ensure full alignment with G7 standards, preventing the entry of Russian-mined diamonds into the market and enhancing transparency across the supply chain. This collaborative effort has led to the creation of a strategic roadmap, which outlines the steps needed to address identified gaps. Botswana is aiming to establish its own certification hub by early next year to certify rough diamonds for export in line with G7 requirements.
At the FACET event in Antwerp, President Duma Boko of Botswana stressed the nation’s commitment to ethical diamond mining practices. “Botswana is committed to pioneering traceability and responsible mining practices, ensuring that our diamonds not only shine in beauty but also embody integrity and ethical stewardship,” he remarked.
The establishment of a certification hub in Botswana is expected to further cement the country’s position as a global leader in responsible diamond production. It will provide reassurance to international buyers and stakeholders, boost investor confidence, and contribute to economic growth.
Meanwhile, the G7 diamond technical team is expanding its efforts to collaborate with other African diamond-producing countries, including Namibia and Angola, in exploring the potential for additional certification hubs. This regional collaboration aims to enhance traceability and promote ethical practices across the diamond industry.
Through these efforts, Botswana is positioning itself at the forefront of the global diamond trade, championing transparency, accountability, and responsible sourcing. The certification initiative will play a key role in ensuring the industry operates in an ethical and sustainable manner, offering a model for other nations to follow.
