Türkiye welcomed Libya’s 5+5 Joint Military Commission in Ankara to discuss strategies for enhancing peace, stability, and security in the North African nation, according to a statement from the Turkish Defense Ministry on Thursday.
The commission, which includes representatives from Libya’s eastern and western factions, discussed confidence-building measures and ways to advance collaborative activities across the divided country. The Turkish ministry emphasized its unwavering commitment to supporting efforts aimed at fostering a unified Libya with fully integrated institutions.
Defense Minister Yasar Guler and Chief of General Staff Metin Gurak met with the Libyan delegation, reaffirming Türkiye’s intention to continue backing initiatives that strengthen Libya’s unity and institutional cohesion.
The 5+5 Joint Military Commission, established to oversee the implementation of the 2020 ceasefire agreement, plays a crucial role in stabilizing Libya, which has been plagued by internal divisions since the fall of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. Türkiye’s active involvement highlights its strategic interest in promoting peace and supporting Libya’s reconstruction efforts.
This meeting underscores Türkiye’s ongoing diplomatic and security engagement with Libya as both nations work toward long-term stability in the region.
