In an exclusive discussion with Turkish journalist Nazlı Çelik, Somali Minister of Defense Abdulkadir Mohamed shed light on the strong ties between Türkiye and Somalia and their shared efforts to combat Al-Shabaab. According to NTV, the minister emphasized Türkiye’s substantial contributions to Somalia’s security and development.
Minister Abdulkadir stated that Somalia has been battling Al-Qaeda-linked Al-Shabaab for nearly two decades. He highlighted Türkiye’s pivotal role, particularly in training Somali military personnel at various levels. This support, he noted, began before the establishment of the TURKSOM military base and continues to this day. Over 10,000 Somali soldiers have undergone training in Türkiye, including specialized troops like pilots, with an additional 5,000 Gorgor battalion soldiers currently in training.
The Gorgor battalions, trained and equipped by Türkiye, are considered the most effective Somali forces since the state’s collapse. These units actively participate in military operations and are central to reclaiming territory and weakening Al-Shabaab. Turkish commanders also offer strategic guidance, significantly enhancing the Somali Army’s capabilities.
The minister highlighted the Defense and Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement, describing it as one of the most comprehensive accords between the two nations. Unlike earlier agreements focusing solely on military cooperation, this framework includes economic collaboration and allows the Turkish Navy to operate in Somali waters, underscoring Türkiye’s long-term commitment to Somalia’s stability and prosperity.
Beyond security, Türkiye and Somalia collaborate in sectors such as trade, healthcare, education, and energy, creating a robust and multifaceted partnership. Minister Abdulkadir expressed optimism that Somalia, with Türkiye’s assistance, will achieve peace and development, ultimately defeating Al-Shabaab within two years.
The minister concluded by acknowledging Türkiye as more than a strategic partner, calling it a brotherly nation with shared aspirations for a better future.
