Africa is advancing in the field of artificial intelligence (AI), showcasing the continent’s growing technological potential.
There are nearly 2,400 AI firms across Africa, with 40% of them being startups. This development in AI usage is having a positive impact on various sectors such as healthcare, marketing, banking, entertainment, education, and agriculture. Economic growth is taking place, and service efficiency has significantly improved.
The Centre for Intellectual Property and Information Technology Law ranked the top 10 countries with the most significant AI firms in 2024. South Africa tops the list, with over 600 AI firms. The government has prioritized AI development, which has helped foster growth in AI-focused startups and organizations.
Nigeria ranks second, with more than 400 AI firms and startups. Technologically, Nigeria is growing rapidly and has become an important tech hub on the continent. GITEX will be held in Nigeria in 2025, offering the country an opportunity to showcase its technological advancements and attract global attention.
Egypt is in third place, with over 200 AI startups. The country’s large population and strategic geopolitical location have made it highly receptive to AI development. Significant growth has been observed in sectors such as healthcare, e-commerce, and education.
Kenya, another important tech hub on the continent, ranks fourth. Known for innovations in fintech and mobile payments, Kenya is leveraging AI to address challenges in agriculture, healthcare, and education.
Fifth on the list is Morocco, where AI firms have seen steady growth this year. The country is attracting global investors, and the number of AI firms continues to rise.
Ghana ranks sixth, followed by Tunisia in seventh, Cameroon in eighth, Tanzania in ninth, and Uganda in tenth. Africa’s investments in AI are contributing to the continent’s digital transformation.
