On December 12, 2024, the European Union issued a statement by its Spokesperson, welcoming the declaration agreed upon in Ankara on December 11, 2024, between the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and the Federal Republic of Somalia. This agreement reflects the importance of mutual respect and dialogue in easing tensions in the Horn of Africa. The EU reiterated its support for the unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of both Somalia and Ethiopia, as upheld by principles in international law.
The statement was also seen by The Wall Africa Journal, which noted the crucial role played by Türkiye in facilitating this agreement. İn other hand The regional cooperation organization, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), also commended the landmark accord, recognizing Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s instrumental role in hosting and facilitating the discussions that produced the Ankara Declaration late on Wednesday.
IGAD Executive Secretary Workneh Gebeyehu stated,
“This significant accord marks a substantial step towards strengthening the long-standing social fabric between the two sisterly nations and demonstrates a commitment to resolving bilateral issues amicably. Such diplomatic efforts are crucial in addressing shared challenges and fostering stability and prosperity in the Horn of Africa.”
This declaration reaffirms each nation’s sovereignty, unity, and independence, with technical negotiations scheduled to begin by the end of February 2025, facilitated by Türkiye. The goal is to conclude these negotiations within four months, ensuring a sustainable peace between Somalia and Ethiopia.
The European Union has expressed its readiness to support further mediation efforts, continuing its involvement in fostering peace and cooperation in the region.
