UN Secretary-General António Guterres has welcomed the “Ankara Declaration,” an agreement between Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed to resolve their differences through friendship and mutual respect.
In a statement, Guterres expressed optimism about the swift commencement of technical negotiations and a positive resolution to the process. He also commended Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan for facilitating the meeting and supporting the implementation of the agreement.
The Secretary-General reaffirmed the United Nations’ commitment to assist the process as needed, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and mutual trust between Ethiopia and Somalia in fostering regional stability.
