Experienced Bidco United player Jacob Onyango has pointed out that the mismanagement of the Kenyan league is a major factor in the struggles of the national team.
He believes that Kenya can improve its performance by adopting the league systems of neighboring countries. He specifically mentioned Uganda and Tanzania as examples. While Kenya failed to qualify for the AFCON, both Uganda and Tanzania secured their spots in the tournament.
Onyango also highlighted the impact of financial instability on Kenyan football.
“Every footballer dreams of representing their country, and I hope to have that chance one day,” Onyango said.
“Kenyan football has potential, but there are key issues that need addressing. For example, inconsistency with league sponsors is a major problem. Sometimes a sponsor is only onboard for six months before pulling out, leaving the league unattractive and unstable.”
He further explained how financial difficulties affect players’ focus:
“When salaries delay, players struggle to focus mentally. Imagine preparing for a match while worrying about how your family will eat. It affects your performance on the pitch.”
Onyango also praised Tanzania’s progress, stating,
“Tanzania’s starting XI has about eight players from their local league. That’s because they’ve heavily invested in their domestic football, and now they’re reaping the rewards.”
He believes Kenya has the talent and quality but lacks proper investment and the right national team call-ups.
The Kenyan national team recently parted ways with Turkish coach Engin Firat, and Onyango’s observations could play a role in the ongoing changes. Despite the challenges, Onyango remains hopeful for the future and believes that these issues can be overcome.
