The sixth edition of the Lagos Canine Carnival, attracted dozens of pet owners and their furry companions, turning the venue into a vibrant celebration of dogs from across Nigeria.
Dogs of all breeds and sizes paraded down the red carpet in colorful costumes, wings, and accessories, fitting this year’s theme, “Angels on Paws.” The carnival provided a platform for owners and their pets to showcase their unique bond while fostering a sense of community among dog lovers.
One of the highlights was a blessing ceremony led by Catholic priest Reverend Father Michael Chike-Osamor, who sprinkled holy water on the dogs. “Some may find it strange,” he acknowledged, “but my faith recognizes the place of animals in God’s creation. They are companions, gifts from God, and a source of warmth. Blessing them is a way of honoring that bond.”
For many attendees, the event was more than just a showcase—it was a chance to connect. “We need events like this more often,” said dog owner Blessing Chukwuma. “It strengthens the bond within the community of dog lovers.”
Organizer Jackie Idimogu emphasized the importance of appreciating both the pets and their owners. “People spend so much time and money caring for their pets without much recognition. This carnival is a way to say thank you on behalf of the dogs,” she said.
Although participation numbers were slightly lower this year, Idimogu noted the growing awareness of pet care and the expanding dog-loving community in Nigeria. She hopes events like these will position Nigeria as a globally recognized, dog-friendly country.
“I want to show the world that Africans love their pets and treat them with the same reverence as anyone else,” she said. “Here in Nigeria, we are celebrating dogs—not just today, but every day.”
The carnival ended with smiles, wagging tails, and a renewed sense of appreciation for the special bond between humans and their canine companions.
