Monaco and Ivory Coast national team player Wilfried Singo was subjected to a racist attack.
The reason for this assault was an incident during a confrontation with Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, where Singo attempted to jump over Donnarumma but accidentally injured him with his studs.
As a result of the impact, the Italian goalkeeper required 10 staples to close a cut on his face.
Singo was not given a card for the incident, but Donnarumma had to leave the match due to his severe injury. Following this, Singo faced racist abuse, particularly on social media, where he was subjected to many racist attacks.
Monaco, his team, stated that the comments were “unacceptable” and expressed strong support for their player, declaring that “such behaviour has no place in sport, either on or off the pitch.” The French league also expressed their support for Singo.
After the match, Singo apologized to Donnarumma, stating,
“My gesture was obviously not intentional but I was able to see afterwards that he had a significant injury to his face.”
The two players spoke after the match, and there seemed to be no ill will between them, but it was noted that Donnarumma would undergo medical examinations and would need to rest for a few days.
