A Somali delegation, led by the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ali Omar, will visit Addis Ababa on December 23, 2024, to reinforce commitments under the Ankara Declaration.
The visit aims to deepen bilateral ties between Somalia and Ethiopia, focusing on mutual respect and cooperation. Officials highlighted Somalia’s dedication to fostering partnerships with neighboring nations, guided by principles of sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity.
The Ankara Declaration, signed in Türkiye earlier this year, reaffirmed respect for sovereignty and emphasized the shared benefits of Ethiopia’s assured sea access while maintaining Somalia’s territorial integrity.
This visit follows tensions earlier in 2024 when Ethiopia signed an agreement with Somaliland to lease a portion of coastline, a move strongly opposed by Somalia. The Ankara Declaration seeks to rebuild trust and cooperation between the two nations.
In light of these developments, Türkiye’s President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is expected to visit both Ethiopia and Somalia in early 2025 to further strengthen trilateral ties.
