Ethiopia’s coffee exports achieved a significant milestone, generating $797 million from 178,000 metric tons exported in the first five months of the fiscal year. This marked a 72% increase in volume and a 55% rise in revenue compared to the same period last year.
According to the Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority, the country exceeded its initial export target of 117,000 metric tons, positioning itself to earn $1 billion from over 200,000 metric tons by mid-year.
Coffee remains Ethiopia’s most valuable export, contributing over 25% of its annual export income. Addis Standard an Ethiopian Journal reports that the sector directly supports six million farmers and over ten million people along the supply chain.
In the previous fiscal year, Ethiopia exported 298,000 metric tons of coffee, generating $1.43 billion in revenue. This year, the country aims to boost exports to 400,000 metric tons and surpass $2 billion in earnings.
