The Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA) announced that restoration efforts for the historic Al-Negashi Mosque and Tomb in Ethiopia’s Tigray region have reached 52% completion.
TİKA emphasized the importance of the site, believed to be the location of the first Hijra, describing the project as crucial for preserving history, culture, and identity.
Located in Wukro, 59 kilometers from Mekelle, the mosque sustained significant damage during the Tigray conflict, particularly from shelling by Eritrean forces. The restoration, funded by Türkiye in collaboration with Ethiopia’s Ministry of Tourism, seeks to repair and preserve the war-damaged site.
Previously restored by TİKA in 2018, the mosque is now undergoing repair under the supervision of experts from TİKA, the Ethiopian Heritage Authority, and the Tigray Regional State Culture and Tourism Bureau. The project highlights a shared dedication to protecting Ethiopia’s historical and cultural heritage.
