Efforts to resolve the prolonged conflict in northern Somalia advanced as Ethiopian Somali Regional State elders met SSC Khaatumo leaders in Las Anod on Saturday, signaling potential for peace negotiations.
The delegation from Jigjiga Somali region conveyed Somaliland’s willingness for dialogue, fostering hope for an end to years of violence in the contested SSC regions. Traditional SSC Khaatumo leader Garaad Kulmiye Garaad Mohamed stated, “Both sides have expressed readiness for peace, and these discussions will guide structured talks.”
The root of the conflict lies in territorial disputes. Somaliland claims sovereignty over the SSC regions following its 1991 self-declared independence, while SSC Khaatumo aligns with Somalia’s federal government.
Newly elected Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi Irro has emphasized peaceful resolutions, marking a departure from previous approaches. SSC Khaatumo leaders remain cautiously optimistic, urging constructive dialogue to address longstanding grievances.
The region, marked by devastating clashes and displacement, now faces a crucial opportunity for reconciliation through mutual understanding and compromise.
