Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has expressed his close attention to the recently signed agreement between Ethiopia and Somalia, facilitated by Türkiye, highlighting its potential to enhance security and stability in the Horn of Africa. The statement was made following a phone call with French President Emmanuel Macron, during which the two leaders discussed regional developments and cooperation.
Al-Sisi reiterated Egypt’s commitment to supporting the agreement and its hope that it would contribute to resolving longstanding tensions between Ethiopia and Somalia. The deal, brokered by Türkiye, comes at a crucial time for the Horn of Africa, a region that has faced political instability and conflict in recent years.
The conversation between the two leaders also focused on strengthening bilateral ties, particularly in the fields of economic cooperation and investment. Both leaders emphasized the importance of attracting French businesses to invest in Egypt’s ongoing development projects, which are seen as vital to the country’s economic future.
Al-Sisi further stressed the deep connection between the security situation in the Horn of Africa and Egypt’s national security, underlining that Egypt is actively working to support Somalia in its efforts to achieve lasting peace and stability. This support includes both direct cooperation and participation in the African Union’s peacekeeping mission, deployed at Somalia’s request.
Tensions between Ethiopia and Somalia had intensified earlier this year following Ethiopia’s agreement with Somaliland, a self-declared independent region of Somalia, to use the strategic Berbera port on the Red Sea. This move led to a diplomatic standoff, prompting Türkiye to step in as a mediator.
The December 12 Ankara Declaration marked a turning point in relations between Ethiopia and Somalia. Signed by both parties, the declaration reaffirmed their commitment to mutual respect for sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national independence. This breakthrough, facilitated by Türkiye, has been seen as a step toward fostering a more cooperative and peaceful relationship between the two nations, as well as enhancing stability in the wider region.
