In an innovative approach to bring entertainment and inspiration to underserved areas, a mobile cinema project in Tunisia is transforming how people experience films.
The Cinema Tdour initiative, a cinema-on-wheels, travels to remote Tunisian communities often excluded from the country’s cultural scene. For many in these regions, the nearest cinema hall is up to 90 kilometers (56 miles) away, according to project manager Meriam Ben Zayed.
“All cinema halls are located in the capital, leaving other areas without access,” Ben Zayed noted.
Beyond screening movies, the project aims to inspire the younger generation. “Out of those watching, maybe 50 will develop a passion for music, cinema, or theater. Instead of resorting to harmful activities, they might write a song or create art,” said filmmaker Ines Ben Othmen, who recently showcased her work in Cinema Tdour’s mobile theater.
Adding a motivational touch, the project invites notable figures to encourage children to pursue their dreams. Recent screenings featured Olympic Taekwondo Champion Firas Katoussi and Olympic Karate Champion Khalil Jandoubi, who shared their journeys of overcoming challenges to achieve success.
“I urge them to persevere and believe in their dreams. Coming from humble backgrounds, we faced a lack of support but succeeded through determination,” Jandoubi shared.
The mobile cinema also serves as a platform for community outreach. Collaborating with the World Health Organization, the project organizes health awareness sessions alongside film screenings.
With a 100-seat capacity, the traveling cinema focuses on rural areas but has also delighted urban audiences in Tunis. Its motto, “The cinema comes to you wherever you are,” underscores its mission to make films accessible to everyone, including those often overlooked in cultural initiatives.
This unique venture continues to spread the magic of cinema while fostering creativity and community spirit across Tunisia.
