In a tragic incident, a suspected bomb explosion at Tsangagyar Sani Uthman Islamiyya School, located in a village near the Nigerian capital of Abuja, resulted in the deaths of two individuals and left two others critically injured on Monday. The authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding this explosion.
According to Josephine Adeh, the police spokesperson for the Territory of Abuja, the explosion occurred in the school premises. Preliminary investigations suggest that three men from Katsina state, who were visiting the school, are suspected to have brought an improvised explosive device (IED) with them.
“Tragically, two of the men died in the explosion while tampering with the improvised explosive device (IED) on the school veranda,” Adeh stated. “The third man and a female trader sustained severe injuries and are currently receiving treatment under police guard.”
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Bomb Squad has confirmed that the explosion was caused by an IED, with remnants of the device recovered from the site. As the investigation continues, it remains unclear whether any students were present at the time of the blast. It is noted that while schools in Abuja are scheduled to reopen for a new term on January 13, Islamic schools sometimes operate on different calendars.
In a related development, the police have detained the owner of the school for questioning as part of their ongoing investigation into the incident.
The community is in shock as authorities work tirelessly to uncover the full details and motives behind this devastating event.
