Recent clashes between the M23/AFC armed group and the Congolese army, supported by allied forces, in North Kivu and South Kivu provinces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have left nearly 160 people injured. The violence has also displaced over 102,000 people in less than a week, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
In Masisi, North Kivu, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) and the Ministry of Health treated 75 wounded individuals at the Masisi General Reference Hospital and Nyabiondo Reference Health Centre. These facilities also sheltered hundreds of civilians seeking protection.
The M23/AFC has since taken control of Masisi’s central area, with fighting now shifting further south to the border with South Kivu. In South Kivu’s Minova and Numbi regions, MSF teams have provided care for 84 injured individuals at the Minova General Reference Hospital and Numbi Hospital, which are also hosting displaced civilians.
MSF continues to deliver critical medical aid to communities affected by the ongoing conflict, which has persisted for over three years. The clashes have exacerbated the already dire humanitarian and health conditions in eastern DRC, displacing hundreds of thousands and leaving countless in need of urgent assistance.
