On Monday, a series of drone strikes, attributed to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), targeted Sudan’s Merowe Dam power station, causing extensive power outages across multiple states. The early morning attack damaged a critical transformer, leading to a fire and disruptions to electricity supply.
The Sudanese army’s 19th Infantry Division, stationed in Merowe, confirmed the assault, reporting some losses while also noting the successful interception of several drones by air defence systems. Cities such as Port Sudan, Omdurman, Atbara, and Shendi, which rely on the Merowe Dam for electricity, were impacted by the outage. The station accounts for around 40% of Sudan’s power.
Firefighters and maintenance teams swiftly responded to extinguish the blaze and are working to restore the power supply. This attack follows a similar incident the previous week, where a transformer at the Merowe facility was also damaged, causing prolonged outages in the Northern State.
Since November, the RSF has increasingly used drones in attacks across Northern and River Nile states, targeting military-related sites, particularly airports in Atbara and Merowe.
