Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud commended the Gaza ceasefire agreement on Thursday, acknowledging the mediation efforts of Qatar, Egypt, and the United States. He called on international and regional actors to uphold the ceasefire and expedite humanitarian assistance to address the escalating crisis in Gaza. The president reaffirmed Somalia’s commitment to peace and advocated for a two-state solution to establish an independent Palestinian state.
According to a speech seen by the Wall Africa Journal, Somalia emphasized its support for Palestine during its inaugural session as a Non-Permanent UN Security Council member. The Somali delegation urged Israel to end the Gaza conflict and adhere to humanitarian laws by ensuring aid reaches civilians. Somali Ambassador to the UN, Abukar Dahir Osman “Baale,” expressed concern over the deteriorating living conditions in Gaza and condemned attacks on hospitals. He called on Israel to take responsibility for protecting the occupied Palestinian population and facilitating life-saving aid.
Previously, Somalis in Mogadishu have also voiced solidarity with Palestinians. Demonstrations included participation from religious figures, youth, and women, who carried Palestinian flags and signs demanding an end to the violence in Gaza. Protesters decried Israeli bombings and highlighted the suffering of civilians, urging international action against the atrocities.
The Somali government has pledged humanitarian support for Gaza, with plans to send aid and medical personnel through Egypt’s Rafah crossing. Somalia has consistently demonstrated its unwavering support for the Palestinian cause, standing in solidarity during moments of crisis and calling for lasting peace in the region.
