Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud reaffirmed the country’s dedication to boosting its energy capacity, describing it as a cornerstone for modernization and economic growth, during his speech at the Africa Energy Summit on Tuesday.
President Mohamud emphasized the Horn of Africa’s abundant renewable energy potential, especially in solar and wind resources, which he called crucial for sustainable and eco-friendly energy production.
“The progress Somalia seeks to achieve depends on affordable and accessible energy. Right now, 50% of our population lacks sufficient electricity. As such, we are prioritizing investments in the energy sector to foster industrial growth, modernize infrastructure, and enhance public services,” he remarked.
The summit, which brought together leaders from across Africa, culminated in the Dar es Salaam Declaration, a commitment to ensure electricity access for 300 million Africans by 2030.
President Mohamud was accompanied by Minister of Energy and Water Resources Abdullahi Bidhan Warsame and Minister of Finance Biixi Imaan Egeh, who are set to hold discussions with their counterparts on renewable energy initiatives and investment opportunities.
The President also extended an invitation to international stakeholders to invest in Somalia’s energy projects, highlighting the country’s untapped potential as a growing market for sustainable energy solutions.
