The Ukrainian government has responded to the decision by Niger’s Transitional Military Government to cut diplomatic ties.
The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs dismissed the allegations made by Niger as unfounded and without merit.
“The accusations against Ukraine mentioned in the statement by Niger’s government representative are completely baseless, lack credibility, and are false,” reads part of a statement.
Ukraine has also denied any role in the Mali attack that led to the deaths of military officers and Wagner mercenaries.
It strongly refutes any allegations of supporting international terrorism or violating the UN Charter and international law.
Ukraine further noted that Niger severed diplomatic ties without performing an investigation to substantiate their claims.
The ministry expressed disappointment over Niger’s decision.
Ukraine reiterated its commitment to building mutually advantageous relationships with African nations, based on principles of equality and non-interference in internal affairs.
It also highlighted that these relationships are grounded in respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity within internationally recognized borders, strict adherence to international law, and the principles of the UN Charter.
On Wednesday, Niger declared it would immediately terminate diplomatic relations with Ukraine, citing alleged aggression towards Mali.
Amadou Abdramane, spokesperson for Niger’s transitional military government, announced that they would request the UN Security Council to address the issue of alleged aggression by Ukraine and its supporters. He also urged the international community to “oppose Ukraine’s stance on endorsing terrorism internationally.”
Earlier in the week, Mali claimed that a military official had suggested Kyiv’s involvement in the recent deadly clashes near the Algerian border.
Andriy Yusov, representing Ukrainian military intelligence, indicated last week that the rebels had been supplied with essential information for the attacks.
Colonel Abdoulaye Maiga expressed astonishment at this assertion and accused Ukraine of breaching Mali’s sovereignty.
Maiga argued that Yusov’s comments revealed Ukraine’s role in a despicable and violent attack by extremist groups
