Women and children are bearing the brunt of Sudan’s ongoing conflict, which has raged since April 2023 between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces. The violence has killed tens of thousands and displaced over 8 million people, creating a severe humanitarian emergency.
The war has worsened existing vulnerabilities, depriving women and children of essential resources such as food, medical care, and shelter. Reports indicate a sharp rise in gender-based violence, with widespread sexual exploitation and abuse due to a lack of accountability.
Sudan is now facing the world’s worst child displacement crisis, with more than 4.6 million children forced to flee their homes. Many suffer from malnutrition, disease, and exploitation, while over 2.5 million girls remain out of school, threatening their future opportunities and deepening long-term inequality.
The destruction of social and family structures has further exposed women and children to violence. With community support systems collapsing, they are increasingly vulnerable to attacks, particularly in areas where ethnic and regional tensions fuel targeted violence.
Urgent international intervention is needed to address the crisis. Increased funding for humanitarian aid, safe access for relief organizations, and diplomatic efforts to restore peace are critical. The Jeddah Declaration, signed in May 2023, provides a framework for protecting civilians and ensuring aid delivery, but stronger global support is required for its implementation.
The African Union also plays a key role in peace-building efforts, with its roadmap offering a strategy for conflict resolution. Greater collaboration with regional bodies could enhance diplomatic initiatives and improve humanitarian response efforts.
If the war continues unchecked, Sudan risks long-term devastation. Generational trauma, deepening poverty, and instability will leave lasting scars, making recovery even more difficult. Addressing the crisis now is essential to prevent further suffering and lay the groundwork for lasting peace.
