A newly discovered natural wonder in Ayegbaju-Ekiti, Ekiti State, is generating excitement among tourism enthusiasts. Dubbed the “Mystery of Ayegbaju’s Tree of Love”, the site features an unusual fusion of a tree and a palm tree, symbolizing resilience and unity.
The Director-General of the Ekiti State Bureau of Tourism Development, Wale Ojo-Lanre, revealed that the discovery was made by environmental expert and former World Water Council president, Michael Ale. The mysterious site was found within an agro-tourism farm owned by a private investor.
Describing the phenomenon, Mr. Ojo-Lanre explained that the tree and the palm appear to be locked in a lasting embrace, their roots intertwined in a rare display of symbiosis. Unlike parasitic plant relationships, these trees support each other in survival.
A remarkable event solidified their bond when a fire engulfed the site. The tree shielded the palm from the flames, bearing the brunt of the damage. In return, the untouched palm helped revitalize its burnt companion by supplying water and nutrients, a striking testament to nature’s resilience. Today, the once-scorched tree is regenerating, sprouting fresh life.
Adding to the mystery, the trees display a mask-like formation resembling a human face, complete with distinct features such as a mouth, ears, and lips.
Mr. Ojo-Lanre emphasized the deeper significance of the site, calling it an allegory for humanity. “This site serves as a powerful message that diversity should unite rather than divide us,” he stated.
He encouraged visitors to witness the marvel firsthand, calling it an experience beyond sightseeing—one that offers inspiration and reflection on nature’s wisdom.
With the discovery of the “Tree of Love”, Ekiti State further cements its position as a growing ecotourism hub, showcasing Nigeria’s rich natural heritage and untapped tourism potential.
