Morocco is experiencing a sharp rise in measles cases. This has led the Minister of Health and Social Protection, Amine Tahraoui, to prepare a detailed report on the situation. He will present the report to the Government Council at their meeting on Thursday. They will discuss measures to control the outbreak.
Since September 2023, measles cases have increased dramatically. Recent data shows 25,000 infections and 120 deaths. These alarming numbers have raised serious concerns.
Mohamed El Youbi, Director of Epidemiology and Disease Control at the Ministry of Health and Social Protection, expressed concerns about the rapid spread of the disease. He emphasized the need for immediate action to prevent further escalation.
In response, the government started a vaccination campaign in schools. The Ministry of Education is leading efforts to immunize students under 18 and ensure they receive complete vaccinations. School administrations have been instructed to take necessary measures. This includes working with health services, preparing suitable spaces for vaccination, and encouraging in coordinating efforts.
Additionally, the government launched a “catch-up vaccination campaign against measles” on October 28, 2024. This campaign aims to vaccinate adults who missed earlier doses and improve immunization rates.
A surveillance and monitoring system has been set up across 12 provincial emergency health centers. This system provides real-time data on the outbreak, allowing health authorities to respond promptly.
The Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Education, and the Ministry of Interior are working together. Their goal is to ensure effective vaccination for children under 18 and those exposed to measles. Their coordinated efforts are crucial to controlling the outbreak and protecting public health.
With swift action and comprehensive measures, Morocco aims to contain the measles outbreak and safeguard the health of its citizens.
