The Sudanese army continued its offensive against the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on Thursday, securing key towns in central Sudan’s Al-Jazirah State.
Military forces took control of al-Maseed, al-Nuba, and al-Tayyi, pushing closer to Giad, a significant RSF stronghold, and Abu Quta, located 50 kilometers from Khartoum. Videos circulating online showed soldiers inside the reclaimed areas.
Army spokesperson Abdel Moneim Abdel Basit reaffirmed their commitment to eliminating RSF presence, stating, “We are determined to liberate every area from the militia.”
Earlier this week, the army regained al-Kamlin, the largest city in northern Al-Jazirah. Last month, it recaptured Wad Madani, the state’s capital, which had been under RSF control for nearly a year. RSF leader Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, known as Hemedti, admitted the loss but described it as a temporary setback.
While the RSF still controls areas in the north and northwest near White Nile State, the army has established dominance over most of Al-Jazirah.
The conflict, ongoing since April 2023, has resulted in over 20,000 deaths and displaced 14 million people, with some research estimating fatalities at 130,000. International organizations continue to warn of worsening humanitarian conditions as fighting persists across 13 of Sudan’s 18 states.
