Sudan is actively working to regain its membership in the African Union (AU) as the organization holds its 46th summit in Ethiopia, a diplomatic source revealed on Tuesday.
Following its suspension in October 2021 after a military takeover led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, Sudan has been absent from AU meetings for four years. To facilitate its return, Sudanese officials have been engaging in discussions with African leaders on the sidelines of the summit, offering assurances of a transition to civilian rule.
According to the source, the Sudanese government has committed to appointing a prime minister and transferring power to a civilian administration by the end of February, aligning with AU requirements for reinstatement.
The AU’s Peace and Security Council is scheduled to hold a special session on Sudan’s status on February 14. On the same day, Addis Ababa will also host a high-level conference addressing humanitarian concerns in Sudan.
