President Julius Maada Bio has been honored with two significant African awards for his leadership and dedication to gender equality, education for girls, and human capital development.
The awards, African HeForShe Champion of the Year 2024 and Presidential African Intelligence Award 2024, were presented by former Malawian President Dr. Joyce Banda and Princess Dr. Asie Kabuki Ocansey, founder of the Nekotech Centre for Excellence.
At the State House in Freetown, Press Secretary Yusuf Keketorma Sandi welcomed guests, highlighting the event as a tribute to a leader whose efforts have greatly benefited Sierra Leone. He noted that these awards reflect Africa’s desire for leadership marked by integrity and progress.
Dr. Joyce Banda praised President Bio’s notable work in promoting gender equality and empowering women. She observed that while Africa has several female presidents, few male leaders actively support the rights of women and girls.
She also acknowledged First Lady Dr. Fatima Maada Bio for her continuous support in advancing gender equality in Sierra Leone. Dr. Banda commended the administration’s efforts to appoint more women to leadership roles, now established by law, confirming President Bio’s role as a true HeForShe Champion. She added that his emphasis on human capital development makes him deserving of these honors.
In his acceptance speech, President Bio expressed gratitude for the awards, seeing them as recognition of his government’s work in promoting women’s socio-economic empowerment and advancing girls’ education, especially in STEM fields.
“These awards are not just personal achievements but a testament to the collective efforts of my government and the people of Sierra Leone to promote education, gender equality, and women’s empowerment. Receiving them from two global leaders in gender advocacy makes this recognition even more meaningful,” he said.
President Bio reaffirmed his administration’s strong commitment to gender equality, emphasizing that this journey has been characterized by dedication and transformative actions. He stressed that gender equality is not only a moral duty but also a key driver of national development, social unity, and economic growth.
He outlined several initiatives, including legislative reforms to enhance gender inclusion, expanded access to education for girls in STEM, increased support for women entrepreneurs, and stronger measures against gender-based violence to ensure a safer environment for women and girls.
“These initiatives are not just policies but pathways to building a fairer and more equitable society. While we celebrate our achievements, we remain fully aware of the challenges ahead,” he added.
Concluding his speech, President Bio emphasized that gender equality is a shared responsibility involving men and boys as allies.
“I dedicate this award to every girl who dreams beyond societal boundaries, every woman who overcomes obstacles, and every man who supports and actively promotes gender equality. Together, we can create lasting change,” he concluded.
The ceremony highlighted Sierra Leone’s commitment to creating a just and equitable society through policies and initiatives that promote gender inclusion and empower all citizens.
