A Sudanese military aircraft crashed on Tuesday near the capital Khartoum, resulting in multiple fatalities among both military personnel and civilians. The incident occurred during takeoff from an airbase, with authorities citing a technical malfunction as the likely cause.
According to a statement from the Sudanese army, the crash took place near Wadi Seidna air base in Omdurman, a key military installation. Emergency teams quickly responded, extinguishing the fire at the scene and transporting the injured to nearby hospitals.
Local reports indicate that at least ten people were killed, with several others wounded. The Karari Resistance Committee confirmed that casualties were taken to Al-Nao hospital. Additionally, residents in the affected area reported damage to homes and power outages following the crash.
This incident comes amid ongoing conflict between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), who recently claimed responsibility for downing a military aircraft in South Darfur. The war, which erupted in April 2023 due to a power struggle between army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and RSF leader Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, has led to a severe humanitarian crisis, displacing millions and causing widespread devastation.
