South Africa secured a 3-1 away victory over Egypt in the 2025 TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN), advancing with a 4-2 aggregate score. Bafana Bafana delivered a stunning performance, dominating Egypt in front of their home crowd.
The visitors started the match with high intensity and quickly found the opener in the 15th minute through Neo Maema. However, South Africa did not slow down after taking the lead. In the 26th minute, Yandisa Mfolozi doubled the advantage, putting Egypt in a difficult position.
Egypt responded well and managed to pull one back before halftime, making it 2-1 and showing some resistance. However, their hopes of a comeback were crushed early in the second half when Luthuli converted a penalty, restoring South Africa’s two-goal cushion. In another tournament match, Gabon displayed a strong performance against Gambia. Despite earning a penalty during regular time, they failed to convert, leading to a penalty shootout. Gambia made no mistakes from the spot, securing their place in the next round.
Elsewhere, Malawi comfortably defeated Comoros 2-0, advancing with a 4-0 aggregate score. Malawi’s goals came in the second half, with Wongani Lungu scoring in the 50th minute and Binwell Katinji sealing the win in the 60th minute.
