Marseille-based humanitarian organization SOS Méditerranée reported that 25 migrants were rescued off the coast of Libya.
According to the organization, the Ocean Viking ship carried out the rescue operation and rescued the people, including five unaccompanied children, three women and two children under the age of four. The survivors are currently receiving medical assistance and support from the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and SOS Méditerranée teams on board.
The distress call was received via an emergency helpline known as the “alarm phone”, which migrants use when they encounter difficulties at sea. Italian authorities have designated Marina di Carrara, north of Pisa, 1,222 kilometers from the rescue site, as a safe landing point.
According to the latest figures from the International Organization for Migration, 247 people have died or gone missing in the Mediterranean trying to reach Europe since the beginning of 2025. In 2024, the number of migrants lost at sea reached 2,360.
