Somali Prime Minister Hamse Abdi Barre announced that the federal government will launch a major military operation against Alshabab during the holy month of Ramadan.
The offensive aims to reclaim territory controlled by the Al-Qaeda-linked group in south and central Somalia. Barre urged clans, scholars, and intellectuals to support government forces, emphasizing the need to counter Alshabab’s propaganda and threats to national stability.
“In the coming days, I will lead the Somali people in a direct fight against Alshabab,” he stated. He also warned of internal and external enemies seeking to divide Somalia and exploit its resources.
Officials stress the need for continuous military pressure and international support to weaken Alshabab, which still carries out deadly attacks despite losing ground in recent years.
